Recognise-Risk-Reimagine-Rebuild-Redistribute

We don’t need alternatives; we need an alternative thinking of alternatives
— Boaventura Sousa Santos, Portuguese Social Scientist and Thinker,
In the forefront of our move toward change, there is only [art] to hint at possibility made real
— Audre Lorde, American Writer and Civil Rights Activist
Culture is Infrastructure. It is not mere surface
— Edi Rama, Prime Minister of Albania and Artist

In May 2019, Dana joined sixteen socially-engaged artists at Tate Exchange, Tate Modern, to explore the political dynamics of five words – Recognise, Risk, Reimagine, Rebuild, Redistribute – in a unique collaborative commission. A Counterpoints Arts commission, part of Who Are We? Project, the work entailed creating a blueprint interrogating what real social change might look like in practice.

During the experimental project, the artists looked at democratic values (how might artists use democracy in the space to challenge different values), building trust, measuring risk & failure, practices of self-care, and the pressure of producing. Can artists and art organisations – medium, big and small – play a pivotal role in re-building democratic infrastructures – in re-imagining the core principles and values of cultural democracy?
